Forged in the Magic City: An Unbuilt Concept for a UAB-Area Hotel

Pre-concept mood board for a UAB-area hotel: industry glow, bottle-glass greens, Blazer energy, porch-light warmth, and refined patina—Birmingham distilled into a material and mood map.

Why share an “unbuilt” concept?

Not every project moves forward, but the thinking still matters. This pre-concept board maps how I approach hospitality: start with the city’s story, distill its textures and rituals, then translate that narrative into materials, light, and guest moments.

The story spine

Birmingham = alchemy—iron and fire, research and medicine, Saturdays in green and gold, summer nights on the porch. The board layers those threads:

  • Magic City sign & Sloss Furnaces: industry, forge, glow.

  • UAB cues (Blazer green, athletics): collegiate energy and optimism.

  • Vintage apothecary glass: the city’s medical and research heartbeat.

  • Hands in: welcome, community, generosity.

  • Fire and ember: foundry heat—also the warmth guests should feel.

  • Mason jar in grass: front-porch evenings, soft light, ease.

  • Dragon / guardian iconography: a nod to the Blazers—mythic but restrained.

  • Wildflower + pollinator: growth, renewal, color accent.

  • Hot billet / weathered facade: grit and patina—the beauty of use.

Material language

From the story to the room:

  • Metals: forged bronze, blackened steel, and aged brass for hardware and lighting—subtle, not theme-park.

  • Glass: bottle-green and smoky lab-glass tones for pendants, bar shelving, and art.

  • Stone + tile: honed limestone and charcoal terrazzo with warm aggregate—echoing slag and cinder textures.

  • Woods: wire-brushed oak and walnut; charred or ebonized accents reference the foundry.

  • Textiles: UAB green with mineral neutrals; small shots of gold; athletic-inspired stitch details.

  • Art & graphics: abstracted maps, reinterpreted “Magic City” typography, and commissioned local photography—never clichés.

Guest moments (how it would live)

  • Arrival: a low, glowing “hearth” fixture—forge light without flame.

  • Lobby: bottle-glass installations with soft “firefly” LEDs; forged pulls and rail details.

  • Bar: apothecary-meets-public-house—ribbed glass, dark stone, burnished brass.

  • Rooms: calm mineral palette; bottle-green reading lamps; a custom print that layers Birmingham maps and skyline fragments.

  • Brand touch: a minimal dragon-scale emboss on menus or key sleeves—easter egg, not mascot.

What this says about Art Form

Place comes first. I build narratives that are specific but sophisticated—rooted in Birmingham’s industrial grit and academic light. Think forge heat and lab-glass clarity, Blazer-green energy and hands-in teamwork. Even when a concept stays on the board, the discipline behind it informs every project that does get built.
