More Is a Love Language: Fearless Maximalism in the Bath
Peony-pink flora, veined black stone, heirloom brass, and graphic stripes—maximalism that’s disciplined, polished, and joyful.
Maximalism, but make it masterful.
When people say “I love color and pattern, but I’m scared it will look chaotic,” this is my answer. Maximalism isn’t about piling it on—it’s about orchestration: scale, repetition, and just enough restraint to let the drama breathe.
The palette (turn the volume up, keep the notes few)
I limited the story to five players: peony pink, inky black, crisp white, antique brass, and a cool teal accent. The pink and black do the talking; brass brings warmth; teal is the unexpected wink that keeps the room from feeling costume-y.
Scale makes it chic
Large scale: bold white veining in the black marble floor, the wide stripe on the vanity stool.
Medium scale: the floral wallpaper repeat.
Small scale/texture: fluting on the vanities, jewelry-level hardware.
Mixing different scales is the difference between high-fashion and visual noise.
Symmetry = calm
The room looks wild on first glance, but it’s incredibly structured: twin vanities, twin mirrors, twin rugs, one centered chandelier. Symmetry gives your eye a resting rhythm so the color can soar.
Shine + shape = glamour
Crystalline chandelier, lacquered black, honed marble, antiqued brass—finish variety adds depth. Organic curves (mirrors, faucets, ottoman, florals) soften the geometry so it feels luxe, not stiff.
Where the eye rests
Two teal rugs and plenty of crisp white (sink tops, striping) act as visual breath. In maximalism, rests are as important as crescendos.
Try it at home: my 5-step Maximalist Formula
Pick 1 hero pattern (wallpaper, textile, or rug).
Add 1 graphic (stripe, check, or bold veining) in a contrasting scale.
Anchor with 1 deep neutral (black, espresso, oxblood) so the color reads intentional.
Repeat metals (one finish, many shapes) for cohesion.
Create symmetry (pairs or a strong centerline) and include two “rests”—solid rugs, white counters, or negative space.
Fearless ≠ reckless. It’s confident editing.
